The Energy of Summer and the Front Fascia Lines
Every season invites a shift. A different pace, a new rhythm in the body, a fresh layer of awareness in our yoga practice. Lately, I’ve been exploring that rhythm through two things I absolutely love: myofascial release and seasonal living—especially how they meet at the front lines of the body.
This summer, my focus has landed on the deep and superficial front fascia lines—and how working with them helps us not only feel more vibrant and mobile, but more connected to the natural expansion of the season itself.
What Is Fascia and Why Does It Matter?
Fascia is the connective tissue that wraps around and weaves through your entire body. It surrounds muscles, bones, nerves, and organs—and it’s highly sensory. Think of it as a gelatinous spider web that holds your body together while allowing it to move with ease.
When we practice myofascial release—using tools like foam rollers or therapy balls—we’re helping hydrate the fascia, break up adhesions (those gnarly “knots”), and restore communication between the brain and body. The result? More freedom, fluidity, and often an unexpected emotional release.
The Superficial and Deep Front Lines
Superficial Front Line (SFL):
This line runs along the front of the body:
• Tops of the feet
• Fronts of the legs (quads)
• Rectus abdominis (six-pack muscles)
• Chest, neck, and scalp
It’s involved in posture, core stability, and energetic openness. We recruit this line in functional movements like squats, deadlifts, and yoga poses like Chair Pose, Plank, and Navasana (Boat Pose).
Deep Front Line (DFL):
This is a stabilizing core line that includes:
• The psoas (hip flexors)
• Diaphragm (main breathing muscle)
• Pelvic floor
• Inner thigh muscles (adductors)
The DFL supports breath coordination, spinal alignment, pelvic stability, and even emotional regulation. Many of the bandhas (yogic energy locks) live here: mula bandha (pelvic floor), uddiyana bandha (lower abdominals), and jalandhara bandha (throat lock).
Together, these lines help us stand tall, move forward, breathe deeply, and speak clearly.
Summer Energy + Front Body Activation
In Ayurveda, yoga’s sister science, summer is governed by pitta dosha, which is all about fire, drive, and transformation. It’s a season of outward expression, movement, and brightness. The front body—our offering side—is where we project ourselves into the world.
When these fascial lines are restricted, we may feel:
• Closed off or hunched
• Low energy or shallow breathing
• Disconnected from our inner fire
• Difficulty speaking up or accessing deeper emotions
But when these lines are healthy and fluid, we feel:
• Mobile and grounded
• Confident and open
• Radiant and present
• Ready to move forward—literally and energetically
Working with these lines can help us embody that expansive summer energy in a sustainable, nourishing way.
Common Imbalances and Holistic Solutions
If you sit or drive a lot (most of us do), your hip flexors might be tight. That can shorten the front line and cause imbalance through the pelvis and spine. You may also experience:
• Rounded shoulders or tech neck
• Shallow breath
• Emotional stagnation
• Weakness in your core or pelvic floor
Mindful yoga movement and myofascial release can be powerful tools for restoring balance. By targeting key areas—like the hip flexors, abdominals, sternum, and neck—you can unlock mobility, increase breath capacity, and restore nervous system regulation.
This Season, Root to Rise
In my classes (live and on-demand at True Love Yoga), I’ve been refining this work with students week by week. We’ve broken down the bandhas, explored specific muscle groups, and intentionally activated both superficial and deep fascia lines.
Some practices you might try to explore your front body:
• Plank pose or forearm plank to build integrity through the front line
• Boat pose (Navasana) to activate the core and pelvic floor
• Breathwork into the diaphragm and lower belly
• Myofascial release with a therapy ball at the sternum, hip crease, or neck
• Root-to-rise grounding through pada bandha (foot lock) to connect earth to sky
This isn’t about aesthetics. It’s about feeling aligned, empowered, and centered in your own skin—especially during a season when everything outside is growing, blooming, and alive.
Reflect: Your Summer Vitality
Here’s a journaling prompt to deepen your awareness this season:
What would it feel like to expand into your full summer energy?
What would it feel like to open your heart, stabilize your core, and move through life with radiant intention?
If you’re curious to explore more, check out past and upcoming episodes of Deepen Your Yoga Practice, where I dive into fascia, Ayurveda, yoga philosophy, and all things embodiment. And as always, you’re invited to join me for classes at True Love Yoga—whether online or in person.
Let this be a summer of liberation, connection, and vitality.
Root down. Rise up. Radiate.
Om Shanti, Om Peace.
